It is then that you will realize the distanceĬompared to almost everything else I've read, Kashmir Maryam’s book stands far ahead of the pack. Some of my favorite lines are as follows: The word Jihad itself translates from Arabic to “the spiritual struggle within oneself against sin.” The book goes chronologically through different phases of one’s spiritual struggle with themselves, and maintaining one’s identity through strife and tribulation.

The exploration into these different themes through Kashmir’s incredible phrasing, the way she can infuse any line with nuance and power, makes this book worth the 5 stars I rated it! Anyone who reads this will take something away, and the beauty of Nafsi is that the topics in the book such as Women, Hope, Struggle, and many more pertain to the message the book conveys-that hope is a valuable thing and that the ultimate outcome is simply peace. Nafsi, which means the soul or the ‘self’, is a contemporary and thought-provoking body of poems. Now and then, a book comes along that makes people enabled to remember every luscious detail-this is that book!
